Is muesli good or bad for you?

Posted on 2/11/26 11:03 AM

Muesli is good for you when it is built on whole grains and isn’t loaded with added sugar. The “”bad”” reputation comes from versions that behave more like breakfast dessert.

On the plus side, a whole-grain muesli gives you fibre, slow-release carbohydrate, some plant protein and, if it has nuts and seeds, healthy fats and minerals like magnesium and iron. Eaten with milk or curd, it makes a filling breakfast that is far better than biscuits and tea.

The things to watch are:

  • Added sugars such as invert syrup, liquid glucose or honey near the top of the ingredient list
  • Sweetened dried fruit, which adds up quickly
  • Portion size: the crunchy kind is dense, and a big bowl can easily cross 300 kcal before milk

A practical rule: aim for a serving of around 40–50 g, pair it with milk, curd or fruit, and choose a variant where grains, not sugars, dominate the label. If you manage diabetes or are watching weight, an unsweetened or “”diet”” style muesli is the safer pick.
