What is muesli made of?

Posted on 2/11/26 12:18 PM

Muesli is a mix of rolled or flaked grains with dried fruit, nuts and seeds. It was created in Switzerland around 1900 by Dr Maximilian Bircher-Benner as a light, raw breakfast for his patients.

A typical muesli contains:

  • Grains: rolled oats are the base, often with wheat, barley, corn or rice flakes. Indian brands increasingly add millets like ragi.
  • Dried fruit: raisins, apple, papaya, pineapple, apricot.
  • Nuts and seeds: almonds, cashews, sunflower, pumpkin or melon seeds.

“”Crunchy”” muesli is usually baked with some sugar syrup or honey to create clusters, while traditional Swiss muesli is untoasted.

The exact recipe varies a lot between brands and even between variants of the same brand. Gaia Crunchy Muesli – Diet, for example, is made of wheat flakes (71.17%), rolled oats (23.68%), apple juice concentrate, lemon powder and an antioxidant. GAIA’s fruit-based variants add dried fruit, almonds and fruit crushes. The ingredient list is always the best guide.
