Not automatically. Plain oats and muesli start from similar grains, so the real difference comes down to what gets added to the muesli.
A bowl of plain rolled oats is a single whole grain: good fibre (including beta-glucan, the soluble fibre linked to lower LDL cholesterol), some protein, and no added sugar. Muesli is a mix. A simple one might be oats, wheat flakes, nuts and seeds, which can work out just as nourishing. A flavoured, crunchy or fruit muesli may also carry sugar syrup, honey, liquid glucose or sweetened dried fruit, and that changes the picture.
So turn the pack over. If oats or another whole grain comes first and there is no sugar syrup high up the list, muesli is a perfectly good breakfast. If sugar appears more than once, plain oats with your own fruit and nuts is the leaner option.
For reference, Gaia Crunchy Muesli – Diet lists wheat flakes, rolled oats, apple juice concentrate, lemon powder and an antioxidant. It is mostly wheat and oats, with no sugar syrup in the ingredient list.
